GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Samford softball team returned to action this afternoon for two more games against Western Michigan and Florida A&M and the Florida Gator Invitational. The Bulldog pitching dominated their opponents as
Olivia Trout threw a complete game no-hitter in a 4-0 win over WMU while
Jordyn Partain allowed one hit as Samford defeated FAMU 7-0. The Dogs take their record to 12-6 after the two victories today.
GAME ONE: SAMFORD - 4 | WESTERN MICHIGAN - 0
The Bulldogs started game one of the day by giving the ball to
Olivia Trout for her second start of the season. Trout's performance was the story of the day as she allowed just one base runner for the game, a walk in the third inning, as she completed a complete game no-hitter. She moves to 2-0 on the season after striking out four Bronco batters.
With Trout's dominance, the Bulldogs weren't going to need much offensively and they got it in the second inning.
Olivia Shaw and
Grier Bruce led off the frame with back-to-back solo homers to put the Dogs up 2-0 followed by an
Ella Nelson sacrifice fly that scored
Linsey Hargis. The homer was the first of the season for Shaw and the second for Bruce.
The Bulldogs added one more insurance run in the fourth inning as Bruce led off with a single before her pinch runner,
Addison Smith, was brought home on a two-out Nelson single. Samford never really rallied again but it wasn't needed as Trout finished off the Broncos.
Samford had seven hits for the game, led by the two from Bruce while Nelson had a game-high two RBIs.
GAME TWO: SAMFORD - 7 | FLORDIA A&M - 0
The Bulldog pitching wasn't done shutting down their opponents as
Jordyn Partain tossed a complete game shutout in game two of the night against the Rattlers. She went the distance, seven innings, allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out seven batters. Partain only had two runners reach base in the third inning but never was really in a jam throughout the night as she moves to 5-4 on the season with the win.
Samford struck for the first time in the second inning offensively when Shaw singled and was brought home on another Bruce homerun. It is her third homer in four games in Gainesville. They added another run in the third inning as
Sarah Squillace led off with a single and was brought home on a Shaw single.
The Dogs blew the game open in the fourth inning, scoring four runs as
McKayla Cothran tripled to score Nelson. Cothran would come around to score on a
Joi Hubbard groundout before singles from Shaw and Bruce scored two more Bulldogs to give Samford the 7-0 advantage.
Samford finished game two with 12 hits, as eight different players recorded one hit and Squillace, Shaw, and Bruce had multi-hit games. Bruce had three RBIs and Shaw scored two runs as the Bulldogs put together two complete performances on the day.
They are back in action tomorrow for one final game of the tournament against Florida A&M again. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. as Samford looks to finish the five-game tournament 4-1 on the week.
