GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. WOFFORD (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team will wrap up its regular season by hosting Wofford in a SoCon series at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are scheduled to play Thursday at 4 p.m., Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
Samford and Wofford have met 48 previous times, with Samford owning a 26-22 series lead. Last season, Wofford won two of the three regular-season meetings, but Samford won two of the three SoCon Tournament meetings, including defeating the Terriers twice in the championship round to win the tournament.
Samford will start right-handed pitcher
Michael Ross (11-0, 2.77 ERA) on Thursday. Ross' 11 wins so far this season are one shy of the school record of 12 by Josh Martin in 2012 and John Russell in 1961. The Bulldogs have not decided on a starter for the last two games of the series. Wofford will start right-handed pitcher Zac Cowan (7-1, 2.93 ERA) and right-hander Camden Wicker (2-3, 3.99 ERA) in the first two games, and the Terriers have not named a starter for game three yet.
Samford has a record of 33-18 overall and 13-5 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs lost two-of-three games at UNC Greensboro over the weekend.
So far this season, Samford has been led at the plate by
Garrett Howe, batting .383 with 15 doubles, eight home runs and 42 RBI.
John Anderson is hitting .376 with 17 doubles, 12 home runs and a team-high 59 RBI.
Andrew Bennett is batting .343 with 10 doubles, six home runs and 34 RBI.
Garrett Staton is hitting .316 with 17 doubles, a team-high 17 home runs and he is tied with Anderson with 59 RBI.
As a team, Samford currently leads the SoCon in home runs with 83 and ranks third in batting average at .312. Individually, Ross leads the league in ERA (2.77), wins (11) and fewest runs allowed (26). Howe ranks second in the SoCon in runs scored (68), and he ranks third in the league in hits (75). Anderson is tied for second in the SoCon in doubles (17), while Staton ranks second in at bats (215).
Wofford enters the series with a record of 33-16 overall and 10-7 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers won two-of-three games from ETSU last weekend.
Wofford has been led at the plate so far this season by Marshall Toole, batting .392 with 12 doubles, nine triples, nine home runs and 57 RBI. Dixon Black is hitting .387 with 12 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs and 66 RBI. As a team, Wofford leads the Southern Conference with a .345 batting average.
