CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Southern baseball team plated eight runs in the fifth inning and seven more in the sixth on its way to a 16-4 win over Samford in the first game of a three-game series Friday evening at the CSU Ballpark.
With the loss, Samford falls to 6-3 on the season. Charleston Southern improves to 7-4 with the win.
Stephen Klein led Samford at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI.
Kaden Dreier went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Will David also went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs.
Jacob Cravey (0-2) started the game on the mound for Samford and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs, just one earned, on five hits, to take the loss.
For Charleston Southern, Austen Izzio went 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI. Peyton Basler went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Connor Carter went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Bucs. Sam Massey (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Charleston Southern, tossing two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
Samford took the early lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning. Dreier singled to right field to drive in
Colton Ledbetter for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.
Samford added to its lead in the fifth inning, plating one run for a two-run advantage. Klein led the inning off with a home run to right field for a 2-0 Samford lead.
Charleston Southern took control of the game with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Basler drove in three runs, and Nicholas Fazzari, Hayden Harris, Sergio DeCello, Carter and Ajay Sczepkowski drove in a run each in the inning for the Bucs.
In the top of the sixth inning, Samford came back with a run to cut the CSU lead to 8-3.
Garrett Staton singled to drive in
Kace Garner for Samford's third run of the game.
The Bucs added seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 15-3. The big blow in the inning came on a grand slam to left field by Izzio. Samford added a run on a triple by
Towns King in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to 15-4. The Bucs plated another run in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 16-4.
The teams will continue their weekend series with a game Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (CT).
