ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The seventh-seeded Samford men's basketball team used a strong performance on both ends of the floor to advance to the Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinals with a 100-71 first-round win over 10
th-seeded The Citadel Friday evening at the U.S. Cellular Center.
With the win, Samford improves to 17-15 on the season. The Citadel ends its season with a mark of 12-18. Samford advances to Saturday's quarterfinal round to take on second-seeded UNCG at 5 p.m. (CT).

- Brandon Austin led Samford with 26 points, making 8-of-16 shots from the floor and 6-of-12 from three-point range.
- Josh Sharkey scored 16 points and dished out eight assists. He now has a school-record 232 assists this season, breaking the old record of 225, set by Christen Cunningham in 2016-17.
- Myron Gordon tallied 15 points, while Ruben Guerrero had 12 points and Robert Allen added 11 points.
- Zane Najdawi led The Citadel with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
- Jerry Higgins III had 12 points, while Alex Reed added 10 points for The Citadel.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The game was tight early on.
- With Samford leading, 13-11, Samford went on a 7-0 run to push its lead to 20-11 with 15:09 left in the first half following a pair of free throws by Sharkey.
- The Citadel fought back to cut the lead to two points at 24-22 with 11:10 left in the half.
- Samford built its lead to 17 points at 43-26 with 2:36 left in the first half after a dunk by Guerrero.
- Samford took a 45-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
- Samford pushed its lead to 25 points at 60-35 with 16:17 left in the game after a three-pointer by Austin.
- The Citadel cut the lead to 17 points at 69-52 at the 13:01 mark in the second half.
- Samford extended the lead back out to 24 at 76-52 with 10:56 to go after a layup by Stefan Lakic.
- The Citadel could get no closer than 18 points the rest of the way as Samford came away with the 100-71 victory.
