Baseball Powers Past Kennesaw State, 6-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford baseball team opened its weekend series with Kennesaw State with a 6-5 win Friday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
 
The win is Samford's eighth-straight victory and the Bulldogs improve to 10-3 on the season. Kennesaw State falls to 6-7 with the loss.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Sonny DiChiara went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI to lead Samford in the win.
  • Brooks Carlson went 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
  • Carson Cupo (2-0) pitched a third of an inning in relief to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
  • Stephen Jones tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing just two hits to pick up his fifth save of the season.
  • Justin Russell went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Terence Norman went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Kennesaw State.
  • Brooks Buckler (0-1) pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits to take the loss for the Owls.
 
SCORING SUMMARY
  • Samford jumped on top first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Anthony Mulrine singled to drive in Branden Fryman for a 1-0 Samford lead.
  • Kennesaw State took the lead with two runs in the top of the second inning. Russell doubled to drive in Norman and Jake Franklin for a 2-1 KSU lead.
  • Samford tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run by DiChiara.
  • Kennesaw State took the lead again with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Norman doubled to drive in Franklin for the first run of the inning. Daniel Seres then singled to drive in Norman for a 4-2 KSU lead.
  • Samford answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. Carlson and DiChiara each hit two-run homers in the inning to give Samford the two-run lead.
  • Kennesaw State plated one final run in the top of the eighth inning to make the final score 6-5.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Samford and Kennesaw State will continue their series with a game Saturday. Due to expected inclement weather, the game time has been moved up to 12 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
