Box Score DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Samford University soccer team extended its winning streak against Southern Conference opponents to 12-consecutive matches Sunday as the Bulldogs tallied a 2-0 victory on the road against the Davidson Wildcats in an early-season conference matchup held at Alumni Stadium.
Samford (5-5, 2-0 SoCon) concluded its arduous league road trip with a 2-0 record and used goals from sophomore
Lindsey Hansen and senior
Adrianne Mancino to defeat
Davidson (3-5-2, 1-1 SoCon). On Friday, the Bulldogs opened their 2012 SoCon slate with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Georgia Southern.
Samford, the defending regular-season and SoCon Tournament champions, have not been defeated by a conference opponent since Nov. 7, 2010. Since then, the Bulldogs have registered consecutive SoCon victories against Wofford, Furman (twice), Appalachian State, Western Carolina (twice), Davidson (twice), Georgia Southern (twice), Chattanooga and College of Charleston.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Melissa Montgomery turned in a stellar performance in goal Sunday and registered the first shutout of her young collegiate career. The Bulldogs' native of Georgetown, Texas, registered five key saves in the shutout victory.
For a second-consecutive match, Samford's
Lindsey Hansen gave her squad an early 1-0 lead as she tallied a momentous first-half goal. Similar to Friday's action, Hansen jumpstarted the Bulldogs' offensive attack with a score at 25:20 in the first period.
On the game-winning goal, Hansen headed in a crossing pass from Mancino for her second score of the 2012 campaign. The assist was Mancino's second in as many matches. The Bulldogs' senior native of Lancaster, Pa., also assisted on Hansen's first-half score against Georgia Southern on Friday.
Just over five minutes into the second half of play Sunday, Mancino joined the Bulldogs' goal-scoring attack as she knocked home a goal at exactly 50:28. On the score, Mancino chipped a shot over the goalkeeper's head from the far side beyond the penalty box. The goal was Mancino's first of the season.
In another hard-fought SoCon duel, Samford barely outshot Davidson, 10-9, on Sunday, but outnumbered the Wildcats in corner kicks, 2-0.
The Bulldogs'
Brittany Hoffman paced Samford's front line with three shots on goal, while Davidson's Julia Singley rattled off four of the Wildcats' nine shot attempts in the match.
With Samford's 2-0 victory, the Bulldogs took a 2-1-3 advantage in their all-time series record versus Davidson. Samford has not been defeated by the Wildcats since its inaugural season as a member of the SoCon in 2008.
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs return home to Birmingham, Ala., for a momentous SoCon contest against the Furman Paladins to be held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
