March 10, 2012

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Samford pitcher Charles Basford pitched eight complete innings, giving up just two runs on five hits, to lead the Bulldog baseball team to an 8-2 win at UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

"I thought that was about as clean of a game as we've played," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "We moved some runners, we had two-out hits at the plate. I thought we did a good job of limiting our strikeouts. As a whole, I thought we battled at the plate well. Charles (Basford) was really sharp on the mound."

Samford improves to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in Southern Conference play with the win. UNC Greensboro drops to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. The win for the Bulldogs evens the three-game series at one game apiece. The final game of the series will be played Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).

In the win, Basford (3-0) struck out three batters and allowed no walks. Lex Rutledge came on in relief to pitch the ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.

For Samford at the plate, Brad Moss went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Brandon Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI.

For UNC Greensboro, T.J. Spina went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kris Richards and Zach Leach drove in a run each for the Spartans. Corey Taylor (2-1) took the loss on the mound for UNC Greensboro, tossing six innings, giving up three runs on five hits for the Spartans.

Samford jumped on top first with three runs in the top of the third inning. Austin Allison singled with one out and later scored from third base when Saxon Butler grounded out to first base. Miller then singled to center field to drive in Moss and Zeth Stone for a 3-0 Samford lead.

The Bulldogs plated three more runs in the eighth inning to push their lead to 6-0. Miller doubled to left-center field to drive in Butler and Zeth Stone for the first two runs of the inning. C.K. Irby later singled to drive in Phillip Ervin to wrap up the scoring in the top of the eighth.

UNC Greensboro came back with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the Samford lead to 6-2. Leach and Richards drove in a run each in the inning for the Spartans.

Samford added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning to push its lead to 8-2. Moss doubled down the left-field line to drive in Tommy Corbin and pinch-runner Matt Frederick to give Samford a six-run lead.
