JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Junior right-hander Frank Allen Yeilding held Jacksonville to one hit and no runs through seven innings and junior center fielder Sae Evans went 4-for-4 with four RBI as Samford knocked off the host team, JU, 6-1 at Alexander Brest Field Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs (9-6) improved to 4-1 in the Atlantic Sun while Jacksonville (6-9) dropped to 0-1 in the conference.
Yeilding (3-1) recorded eight strikeouts in the game. He and teammate Ehren Wassermann, who relieved Yeilding in the eighth, held the Dolphins to two hits in 30 at-bats. The duo ended JU left-fielder Chad Oliva's 21-game streak of reaching base via hit or walk.
Samford jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Sae Evans solo home run to left field in the top of the first. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third. Robert Evans led off with a triple to right center. After Michael Collins walked, Sae Evans delivered a three-run shot over the right field wall, putting Samford ahead 4-0.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fifth. With Cory Sumner on base, Sae Evans doubled to left field. Grant Caldwell's sacrifice fly then scored Sumner and Sae Evans scored on an RBI-single by Eric Hollis, giving Samford a 6-0 lead.
Jacksonville's lone run came in the eighth, when Chad Hauseman reached on an error and scored on Rob Hudson's sacrifice fly making it, 6-1.
Kris Regas (0-3) took the loss for the Dolphins. Regas gave up six runs on 10 hits and struck out four in seven innings pitched.
Robert Evans finished the game 2-for-4 with one run scored while Collins went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Samford and Jacksonville complete the three-game series Saturday with a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. (ET).
