March 2, 2010
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Samford's Oliver Reynolds was named the Southern Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week Tuesday after the Bulldogs' junior netter turned in a perfect record in both singles and doubles play last week. The honor, which was awarded by the SoCon league office, was Reynolds' first of the season. Reynolds tallied a 2-0 record in singles competition last week and also teamed with Carl Abalos to pick up a pair of doubles victories. Samford improved to 6-1 on the season with wins over Belmont (4-3) and Murray State (5-2). Reynolds topped Belmont's Renato Antun, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 3 singles position Friday afternoon. He then posted a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Murray State's Jorge Caetano at No. 2 singles Sunday. Last week's wins helped the junior improve his singles record to 6-1 this spring. Reynolds recently extended his winning streak to six-consecutive matches Monday with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against College of Charleston's Tom Delme. The McDonough, Ga., native teamed with Abalos at No. 1 doubles for the Bulldogs as they picked up a pair of wins in dual-match play. Against Belmont, Reynolds and Abalos downed Antun and Rafael Matos, 8-6. They also topped Murray State's Ben Clos and Jose Berardo at the top doubles spot. The Bulldogs will next be in action March 9 when they host Mercer at 2:30 p.m. (CST). Other top performers in the Southern Conference last week included Davidson's Calum Gee, Elon's Chase Helpingtine, Furman's Carl Lundberg and Chattanooga's Jackson Tresnan.
