Softball Drops Midweek Contest To UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the opening night of the longest homestand this season, the Samford softball team dropped a 3-1 game to crosstown foe UAB.

The Bulldogs move to 18-26 on the year as the Blazers improve to 22-21 with the victory on Wednesday evening.

Jordyn Partain got the start in the circle for Samford and tossed her sixth complete game of the season in a losing effort. The sophomore allowed three runs on nine hits but struck out four Blazers without issuing a walk.

The Bulldog duo of Lindsey Nelson and McKenzie Newcomb each recorded a pair of hits in the midweek matchup.

After missing the last four games, Sarah Squillace returned to the Samford lineup on Wednesday with a pinch-hit single in the fourth before staying in the game to place second base.

Grier Bruce went 0-for-3 on the evening to snap her eight-game hitting streak but extend her on-base streak to 10 games by working a two-out walk in the bottom of the first.

The lone Bulldog run of the night came in the bottom third when Logan Champion turned on a 0-1 pitch and sent it flying over the wall in right field for her ninth home run of the season and her 22nd RBI. Champion also threw out her 18th runner of the season in the sixth.

Samford's best chance for runs on the night came in the second frame when the Bulldogs had the bases loaded before back-to-back groundouts and a strikeout ended the inning.

UAB answered with two runs in the top of the fourth before scoring an insurance run in the seventh inning to take the game 3-1 and sweep the season series.
