Softball Drops Pair Of Games To Stetson and No. 18 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team fell 1-0 in eight innings to the Stetson Hatters before dropping the nightcap 9-0 to No. 18 Georgia on the second day of the Georgia Bulldog Classic.

With the pair of defeats, Samford moves to 6-13 for the 2023 season. Stetson improves to 14-6, while Georgia sits at 15-5 after playing the Bulldogs.Â

In game one, Taylor Harris notched her second consecutive two-hit game of the weekend. Sarah Squillace, Grier Bruce and Sara Bond each collected a base hit.Â

Despite being tagged with the loss, McKenzie Newcomb allowed only four hits over the course of eight strong innings. Newcomb also struck out a career-high 12 hatters. The 12 strikeouts are the most in a single game by a Samford since Mollie Hanson fanned 13 in a game during the 2014 season.Â

The lone run of the game came in the eighth inning when a Hatter scored on an RBI bunt single.Â

The defeat to Stetson was the ninth one-run loss of the season for the Bulldogs.Â

In game two, Samford was no-hit for the first since 2019. In total, Samford only had a trio of base runners in the game.Â

Harris got the starting nod in the circle for the first in her career. The freshman was handed the loss after allowing three runs in 0.2 innings of work.Â

Georgia scored three in the first, one in the second and third innings before ending the game with a three-run home in the bottom of the sixth.
