Samford Drops 1-0 Decision At Kennesaw State In Extras

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Samford Softball team fell 1-0 in nine innings to the Kennesaw State Owls on Tuesday night.
 
The defeat is Samford's eighth one-run loss of the season and drops the Bulldogs to 5-10 on the year. Kennesaw State improves to 5-10.
 
Reigning Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week McKenzie Newcomb was dealt a tough loss in the circle after allowing just one unearned run in the ninth inning. Newcomb's record moves to 2-3 on the year despite striking out nine Owls in her second complete game effort of the season. 
 
Two of the four Bulldog hits on Tuesday night came off the bat of Logan Champion as the Samford catcher doubled in the second and tripled off the centerfield wall in the seventh.
 
Sarah Squillace and Abigail Dorsett each had singles in the contest. 
 
The pitching stalemate lasted through the first eight innings with neither team able to plate a run. Newcomb neutralized Owl threats in the first, third, fifth and eighth innings stranding a Kennesaw State running in scoring position each time. 
 
Samford's most threatening chance of the game came in the seventh when Champion tripled with one out before being stranded. 
 
In the bottom of the ninth, a leadoff Owl single advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before coming around to score on a Bulldog error. 
 
UP NEXT:
Samford will stay in the state of Georgia as the Bulldogs head to Athens for the weekend for the Georgia Bulldog Classic against Ball State, Stetson and Georgia.
