BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team fell 3-2 on Sunday in the final game of the UAB Classic to UAB.
Samford concludes the weekend with a 2-6 record over the opening two weeks of the season. UAB improves to 7-4.

The sophomore duo of Grier Bruce and Mckayla Cothran each had a two-hit game against the Blazers, while Sarah Squillace, Ansley Yantis, Logan Champion and Lindsey Nelson each tallied a base knock. Yantis swiped the lone Bulldog bag in the contest.

Sara Bond started the game in the circle for the Bulldogs and tossed 3.1 innings of one-hit shutout ball but was given a no-decision. Jordyn Partain and Lainey only allowed a run over two innings of relief work.

McKenzie Newcomb was tagged with the loss as the sophomore surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh in the Blazers walk-off.

The crosstown foes held each other scoreless for the opening four innings of play before UAB scratched across a run off of Baker in the home half of the fifth.

In the next half inning, Squillace reached on a single to jumpstart the Bulldog rally with one way. A single by Yantis and a Blazer error moved Squillace to third and brought Bruce to the plate. On a 2-2 count, Bruce sailed a fly ball over the Blazer right fielder for a two-run double that put Samford out front for the first time in the game.

The Bulldogs held the lead until the bottom of the seventh when the Blazers strung a trio of hits together off of Newcomb before a two-run single ended the game with UAB claiming the 3-2 win.

Samford heads to Alabama on Wednesday for a midweek matchup with the Crimson Tide before returning to Birmingham to host Southern Indiana, IUPUI and North Alabama in the Samford Bulldog Classic staring on Friday.
