BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team fell by a score of 9-3 to Alabama Tuesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford falls to 18-20 on the season. Alabama improves to 25-17 with the win.
Samford was led at the plate by
Maurice Hampton Jr., going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI.
Garrett Howe went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
Will Lynch (0-4) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
For Alabama at the plate, Owen Diodati went 4-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Dominic Tamez went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Alabama. Ben Hess (2-1) tossed 6.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits to earn the win for the Crimson Tide.
Alabama scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Samford plated its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Howe scored from third base on a ground out by
Will David to cut the lead to 4-1.
The Crimson Tide scored a run in the sixth inning, three runs in the seventh inning and one more in the eighth to make the score 9-1. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Samford's Hampton homered to left-center field to make the score 9-2. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Hampton doubled to left-center field to drive in
Joseph Salvo to make the final score 9-3.
Samford will play host to the 22
nd-ranked Wofford Terriers in a three-game Southern Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are set to play Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
