Baseball Drops Series Opener At No. 11 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Samford University baseball team dropped its series opener at No. 11 Florida State, 7-0, Friday evening at Dick Howser Stadium.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 4-1 on the young season. Florida State improves to 4-1 with the victory.
 
Will David went 1-for-4 to lead Samford at the plate. Jacob Cravey (0-1) took the loss on the mound, tossing 3.2 innings, giving up four runs, just three earned, on eight hits, while recording six strikeouts. Dominic Ganley, Cole Fryman, Drew Byers, Colin Ahearn and Logan Jones also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
 
Florida State was led at the plate by Treyton Rank, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Logan Lacey homered and drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate. Brett Roberts, Jordan Carrion and Colton Vincent also had two hits each for the Seminoles. Parker Messick (2-0) earned the win for FSU, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out 13 batters.
 
After a scoreless first inning, Florida State took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Vincent scored when Rank reached base on a Samford error for a 1-0 Seminole lead.
 
FSU plated two more runs in the third inning to push the lead to 3-0. Lacey hit a solo home run to left field for the first run of the inning. James Tibbs later singled to drive in Alex Toral for a three-run Seminole lead. In the fourth inning, Rank scored when Lacey hit a sacrifice fly to right field for a 4-0 FSU lead.
 
The Seminoles added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to push their lead to 7-0. Carrion, Vincent and Rank drove in a run each to give FSU a seven-run advantage.
 
The teams will continue their series with a game Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) at Dick Howser Stadium.
