2013-14 Samford Basketball Schedule
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - The Samford University basketball team officially released its 2013-14 schedule Wednesday as the Bulldogs announced a 31-game slate featuring tough road contests against Indiana, Marquette and Florida Gulf Coast, as well as 14 key home games to be held in the Pete Hanna Center.
"The first thing that jumps out at me about the schedule is that we're playing at Indiana," said Samford head coach Bennie Seltzer. "It's kind of funny, I told Tyler Hood that we were going to play at Indiana and he said that playing in Assembly Hall was one of the things that he had on his bucket list. It's going to be exciting, because it's a big-time atmosphere and it's what college basketball is all about and I'm glad our guys get a chance to experience that."
Samford's home slate will also include key matchups against former Ohio Valley Conference rivals Austin Peay and UT Martin. Last season, the Bulldogs played on the road at UT Martin and posted a decisive 75-62 victory against the Skyhawks. Additionally, Samford opened its 2012-13 slate at Austin Peay, but dropped a hard-fought 75-64 decision in Clarksville, Tenn.
All-time, the Bulldogs own an 8-4 record versus UT Martin and a 6-15 mark against Austin Peay.
On Nov. 5, Samford will open its competitive schedule with a home exhibition game versus Miles College. The contest marks the Bulldogs' second straight exhibition meeting with Miles College. Last season, Samford posted an 87-59 victory over the Bears at home in the Pete Hanna Center.
The Bulldogs will begin their regular-season schedule on Nov. 8, against Martin Methodist. Following its home-opener, Samford is then scheduled to embark upon an arduous six-game road trip featuring contests at UT Arlington (Nov. 12), Indiana (Nov. 15), Louisiana-Monroe (Nov. 18), East Tennessee State (Nov. 21), Western Kentucky (Nov. 23) and Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 26).
"That's a tough road stretch, and at our level, it's what we have to do sometimes," Seltzer said. "We have to play a lot of road games. This season, we're returning a game at UT Arlington and we're starting a series against Louisiana-Monroe. East Tennessee State, Middle Tennessee and Stephen F. Austin are all a part of a multi-team tournament and that's the way that it all worked out. We'll definitely be road tested once we get through that stretch."
Beginning Nov. 29 versus Campbellsville University, the Bulldogs will host a four-game homestand at the Pete Hanna Center. The four-game stretch will also feature home contests against Kentucky State (Dec. 1), UT Martin (Dec. 4) and Austin Peay (Dec. 7).
In mid-to-late December, Samford will take back-to-back trips to Florida to face both Florida Gulf Coast (Dec. 14) and Jacksonville University (Dec. 20). The Bulldogs' trip to Fort Myers, Fla., will mark Samford's second straight appearance in Alico Arena. Last season, the Bulldogs played in a tournament held at Florida Gulf Coast and squared off against both Toledo and Alcorn State.
"We also play at Marquette this season and that's also an unbelievable college basketball venue," said Seltzer. "I really like our schedule. We have a couple of big dogs to play, but we also play at Florida Gulf Coast and at Jacksonville, so we have some really good games on our schedule."
After Christmas, Samford is scheduled to return to play at Marquette on Dec. 28. The meeting will be the Bulldogs' first against the Golden Eagles in school history.
Following its final non-conference game of the regular season versus Presbyterian College on Dec. 30, Samford will begin Southern Conference play versus Wofford on Jan. 2, in the Pete Hanna Center.
The Bulldogs' 2014 home conference slate will also feature games against league rivals Furman (Jan. 11), UNCG (Jan. 23), Elon (Jan. 25), Davidson (Feb. 6), Chattanooga (Feb. 8), Appalachian State (Feb. 27) and Western Carolina (March 1).
On the road in SoCon play this season, Samford will square off with Georgia Southern (Jan. 4), Chattanooga (Jan. 9), Western Carolina (Jan. 18), Furman (Jan. 30), Wofford (Feb. 1), Appalachian State (Feb. 13), Elon (Feb. 15) and The Citadel (Feb. 24). Last year, the Bulldogs finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 9-9 record in conference play, but only a 3-6 mark in road games.
"It's too early to tell how we'll stack up in conference play this season," Seltzer said. "Especially, because there are a few new coaches in the league and I'm only in my second season, so there are a lot of variables, but I think the two teams that everybody is chasing are Davidson and Elon. After that, I think there's everybody else. I think those two teams are the best in our league right now, and then the other nine teams will be in a very tight race. It's going to call for some good competition."
The 2013 SoCon Tournament will be held March 7-10, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C.
The Samford University basketball team will begin competitive play in its 2013-14 schedule on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs welcome the Miles College Bears to the Pete Hanna Center for a cross-town exhibition contest.
