BIRMINGHAM, Ala.— Jazmine Powers has been promoted on the Samford women's basketball coaching staff, head coach
Mike Morris announced on Monday.
Powers, who served her first season on the coaching staff during the 2012-13 season, will now be involved in all aspects of the program, including recruiting and on the court coaching.
"Jazz Powers is a tremendous asset to our program," Morris said. "She is a person of very high character and possesses all the skills to be successful in her new position on our staff. Her credibility, personality, work ethic and her ability to evaluate players will serve her very well as a recruiter. She will represent our program and Samford University very well on the recruiting trail. She is very deserving of this promotion and I am very excited about what she can bring to the table in her new role"
In her first season as a coach at Samford, Powers handled all aspects of the team's road trips, including lodging and meals. She also worked with the strength and conditioning coaches on coordinating the team's strength and conditioning program.
Powers played for the Bulldogs, serving as a point guard for four seasons prior to getting into coaching. She finished her playing career ranking seventh in school history in games played (122) and ninth in assists (187).
Powers was a key member of two teams that won Southern Conference Tournament titles, and earned NCAA Tournament bids. Overall, she helped the Bulldogs to the program's first three national postseason tournament bids, as the Bulldogs earned a bid to the WNIT following her sophomore season in 2010.
In addition to her accomplishments on the court, Powers performed well in the classroom as well. She was named to the SoCon's Academic Honor Roll in each of the last three years, and she was a three-time member of the school's Dean's List as well.
Powers, a native of Decatur, Ala., graduated Cum Laude with a degree in family studies and child development education from Samford in the spring of 2012.
