The Samford football team held its first scrimmage of spring practice Saturday evening at Seibert Stadium.

The team ran about 70 plays during the scrimmage, and head coach Pat Sullivan said he saw some positives in his team's performance.

“We weren't polished, but I really liked the effort of our guys,” Sullivan said. “You always tell them, it is never as good (as it seems) and never as bad (as it seems). There's no question that we have some talent.”

Quarterbacks Ben Neill and Carson Barnett both saw time under center during the scrimmage. Returning starter Andy Summerlin was held out of the scrimmage. Barnett completed 16-of-25 passes for 139 yards. Neill was good on 9-of-14 passes for 45 yards.

D'Morrise Bledsoe led the running game, rushing seven times for 58 yards and a 29-yard touchdown. Jake Wilks had nine rushes for 44 yards and a five-yard score. Stanley Robinson rushed nine times for 20 yards.

Jauan Davis had five catches for 44 yards to lead all receivers. Jeremy Brown caught two passes for 36 yards, while Emmanuel Obajimi had four receptions for 31 yards.

D'Morrise Bledsoe made some nice runs,” Sullivan said. “It was good to see a couple of the young receivers step up. (Emmanuel) Obajimi made a couple of nice plays and Jeremy Brown made a play or two. I thought, overall our first-team defensive line really played well.”

Defensively, Josh Killett led the way with nine tackles. Josh Kimberlin had six tackles and an interception. Trey Wesley also intercepted a pass, to go along with his five tackles. Caleb Hullett and Jay West tallied five tackles each. John Hudson also had an interception and finished with three tackles.

The Bulldogs will take Sunday off from spring practice. The team will practice again Monday, with the workout scheduled to begin at 4:15 p.m. at Seibert Stadium. The team's next scrimmage is scheduled for next Saturday, April 13, at 9 a.m. at Seibert Stadium.
