BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The Samford women's basketball team shot just 26.8 percent overall and 13.0 percent from three-point range in a 58-38 Southern Conference loss to Davidson Saturday afternoon at the Pete Hanna Center.
“We put ourselves in a hole early,” Samford head coach
Mike Morris said. “Obviously, Davidson is a very good team. They're good and they did a good job today.”
Samford was led in the game by senior
Hannah Dawson with 10 points and 14 rebounds. The double-double was her fifth of the season. Fellow senior
Jazmine Martin added eight points for the Bulldogs. The two seniors were honored prior to Saturday's game.
For Davidson, Sophia Aleksandravicius led the way with 16 points and six rebounds. Barbara Sitton scored 12 points, while Sarah Davis added 11 points for the Wildcats.
Davidson jumped out to an early lead at 10-3 with 13:57 to go in the first half after a jumper by Laura Murray. Samford scored six of the next seven points to cut the lead to two points at 11-9 with 10:14 left in the half after a layup by
Ashli Mayes.
Davidson then went on a 9-0 run to push its lead to 20-9 with 6:00 to go after a free throw by Aleksandravicius. The Wildcats pushed their lead out to 12 points at 26-14 with 1:52 to go in the first half after a layup by Sitton. Davidson took a 28-18 lead into halftime.
Davidson opened the second half on a 13-4 run to push its lead to 41-22 with 14:30 to go in the game after a layup by Sarah Davis. Samford fought back to cut the lead to 10 points at 45-35 with 5:39 to go after a jumper by Mayes.
Samford, however, could get no closer than 10 points. The Wildcats closed the game with a 13-3 run to make the final score 58-38.
As a team, Samford finished with 37 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards. Davidson had 41 rebounds, nine on the offensive end. Samford committed 16 turnovers, while Davidson turned the ball over 10 times.
With the loss, Samford falls to 12-15 overall and 9-9 in Southern Conference play. Davidson improves to 18-9 overall and 15-2 in league play.
