HARWICH, Mass.—Samford outfielder Phillip Ervin has been named the Most Valuable Player for the prestigious Cape Cod League, the league announced late last week.
Ervin, playing for the Harwich Mariners, helped lead his team to the Eastern Division title. He led his team in batting with a .323 average, RBI with 31, runs scored with 29 and stolen bases with 10 in 12 attempts. He ranked second on the team in home runs with 11 and in doubles with five.
Throughout the summer, Ervin had multiple hits in 12 different games, including a 4-for-4 performance against Bourne on June 22. He also had multiple RBI in eight games.
Ervin also had one pitching appearance this summer. He earned the win, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, in a 5-1 win at Brewster on August 7.
During his sophomore season in 2012, Ervin helped lead Samford to the best season in program history. The Bulldogs won a school-record 41 games and earned their first Southern Conference title and first NCAA Tournament bid.
Ervin led Samford in doubles with 18, and he ranked third on the team in batting with a .327 average in 2012. He was also third on the team in home runs with 10 and in RBI with 52.
